In 2018, a survey by the National Statistical Office (NSO) revealed that around 2.2 percent of Indians live with disabilities, highlighting the need for comprehensive support and healthcare services for this segment of the population. Driven by a shared commitment to improving the lives of specially-abled children, Puja Kapur and Himani Khanna, both experienced paediatricians, embarked on a mission to create a holistic and nurturing environment for uniquely-abled children. Their initiative, Continua Kids, founded in December 2016, is making a significant impact in Gurugram and beyond.
A Unique Collaboration:
Puja Kapur and Himani Khanna, former colleagues at Artemis Hospital in Gurugram, brought together their expertise and passion for paediatric care to address the challenges faced by specially-abled children. Puja Kapur, a paediatric neurologist, specialized in diagnosing diseases and referring children for required therapies. She recognized that parents often had to visit multiple centres for various therapies and were left with many unanswered questions. This led to the inception of Continua Kids.
Himani Khanna, a paediatrician with specialization in Developmental Paediatrics, shared Puja’s vision of creating a place where special needs children could receive comprehensive care, combining scientifically proven therapies and parental education. They aimed to be case managers, ensuring the overall progress of each child while empowering parents with knowledge and support.
A Holistic Approach:
Continua Kids focuses on neurological disorders and deviances affecting new-borns to 18-year-old children. The centre offers a range of services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, applied behaviour analysis, specialized therapy for autism, remedial education, yoga therapy, and psychological and psychiatric support. All of these services are provided under the guidance of a paediatric neurologist and a developmental paediatrician.
The journey begins with a meticulous diagnosis process, involving scales and questionnaires to understand the child’s condition fully. A team of doctors then creates an individualized intervention plan for each child, regularly assessing progress and setting new goals. Continua Kids not only treats the child but also offers counselling and support to parents, helping them understand the condition and cope effectively.
Breaking Barriers:
In India, specially-abled children often face numerous barriers, including physical, financial, and attitudinal challenges. To address these issues, Continua Kids provides a supportive environment where every child is given the best possible healthcare. Importantly, they also reduce prices for therapy sessions for low-income families and arrange sponsorships, ensuring that financial constraints do not limit a child’s access to care.
The Continua Kids app complements their services by enabling parents to keep a comprehensive record of their child’s medical history. It provides information about ongoing treatments, therapy sessions, and assessments. The app also encourages parents to track their child’s development and seek professional help promptly if any concerns arise.
Empowering Families and Society:
Beyond their clinic, Puja Kapur and Himani Khanna conduct awareness campaigns and information sessions in schools across North India. They’ve organized marathons and walkathons to support their cause and have held workshops for parents at their centres.
Continua Kids has impacted over 7,000 children over the last three years, helping them overcome a range of neurological challenges. The startup aims to instill confidence in parents that their children can lead independent and fulfilling lives.
Continua Kids envisions a future where they streamline processes, improve their app, and consolidate their existing centres. With an ambitious plan to establish 100 centres over the next five years, Puja Kapur and Himani Khanna seek further investment to achieve their vision of providing specialized care and support to specially-abled children across India.
In a society that is gradually becoming more aware of the needs and rights of specially-abled individuals, Continua Kids stands as a beacon of hope. Through their commitment, expertise, and innovative approach, Puja Kapur and Himani Khanna are paving the way for a brighter future for uniquely-abled children and their families.
