In the bustling and ever-evolving world of food technology, a Gurgaon-based startup is making a name for itself by delivering high-quality home-cooked meals right to the doorstep of Indian consumers. Bite Club, founded by Aushim Krishan, Sidhharth Sharma, and Prateek Agarwal, operates as a managed marketplace that connects talented home chefs, recipe bloggers, ex-restaurateurs, and professional cooks with eager food enthusiasts. The result is a platform that offers an ever-changing menu, no minimum order requirement, and a strong focus on delivering wholesome and healthy meals. The journey of Bite Club began with the convergence of shared passions for food and a shared frustration with the existing food delivery options. Aushim and Prateek, who were batchmates at IIT Kharagpur, along with Sidhharth, who crossed paths with Aushim in Singapore during their professional careers, decided to venture into the food-tech space. They drew inspiration from the 1999 movie ‘Fight Club’ and named their startup “Bite Club.”
Initially, Bite Club operated as a mobile app-only restaurant that served home-style meals. In November 2014, they quietly launched their Android app in Gurgaon, and within a short span, they had already served over 5,000 meals. The positive response led them to expand their services to the web and iOS devices, reaching a broader audience.
The key to Bite Club’s success is its unique approach. They have onboarded over 100 talented chefs, while Bite Club handles the packaging, delivery, technology, analytics, and marketing. Their vision is to empower these chefs to run their own “restaurants” effectively through the platform. One of their standout advantages is the guilt-free nature of home-cooked food, encouraging customers to place repeat orders. As a result, Bite Club has achieved high customer retention, with many customers ordering around five times a month.
The food-tech space in India is undeniably crowded, with several players vying for a slice of the market. Notable investments have been made in the sector, with companies like Foodpanda, Dazo (formerly Tapcibo), and Grab securing funding. Other startups, including Yumist, Frsh, TinyOwl, Swiggy, and SpoonJoy, have been making waves with their innovative approaches to food delivery. Even industry giant Zomato has ventured into the online ordering space, signaling the sector’s attractiveness.
Bite Club, while recognizing the competition, stands out with its unique offerings. They pride themselves on a no minimum order requirement, a daily changing menu, app and web-based ordering, and a strong commitment to providing healthy and fresh food. According to Prateek, their strength lies in technology, making it a pivotal component of their business. They are well-versed in automating each step in the supply chain, distinguishing them from many traditional restaurants.
Bite Club has received seed funding from Powai Lake Ventures and a group of investors, including Ashish Kashyap (ibibo Group), Aneesh Reddy (Capillary Technologies), and Alok Mittal (Canaan Partners). Currently, the startup’s primary focus is on perfecting its food ordering and delivery platform. They have navigated challenges related to understanding customer behavior and fine-tuning their offerings through feedback mechanisms and data analytics.
As Bite Club celebrates its first year of operation, the startup has proudly served over 25,000 meals to more than 2,000 satisfied customers. Their sights are set on expanding beyond Gurgaon, with plans to launch their services in Delhi in the near future. With their innovative approach and a strong technology-driven model, Bite Club is poised for continued growth and success in India’s competitive food-tech landscape.
