In a world dominated by e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart, local sellers and businesses often find themselves struggling to compete. However, Devashish Goyal, the founder of Gurugram-based OhLocal, has set out to change this narrative by revolutionizing the way consumers shop locally. OhLocal is an AI-enabled smart bidding platform that connects local buyers and sellers in real time, offering a new and innovative way for consumers to discover products and for local businesses to thrive.
Transforming Local Commerce:
Devashish Goyal’s vision for OhLocal was born out of a desire to bridge the gap between local sellers and consumers, reminiscent of a time when shoppers would visit multiple local stores to find the best prices and product availability. The goal was to provide the convenience of online shopping while supporting local businesses. He explains, “I aimed to bridge the gap between local sellers and consumers by revolutionising how we used to shop before Amazon and Flipkart ever arrived, visiting multiple local shops to find the best price, and enable product discovery and availability.”
Empowering Local Buyers and Sellers:
OhLocal operates as an O2O (online-to-offline) marketplace, offering a platform for local buyers and sellers to engage in transactions across various product categories, including electronics, home appliances, mobile phones, and laptops. The platform is currently operational in four cities—Meerut,
Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad—and has ambitious plans to expand to 20 more cities in the near future.
One of the standout features of OhLocal is its flat fee model, which significantly reduces the fees local sellers have to pay compared to traditional e-commerce platforms. This fee structure allows sellers to retain a higher percentage of their margins, making it an attractive proposition for local businesses.
The journey of OhLocal began when Devashish personally experienced the disparity between online and offline prices for a product he wanted to purchase—an air conditioner. He initially considered buying it online from platforms like Flipkart and Amazon but was met with a two-week delivery time. Turning to local vendors, he discovered not only a more favourable price but also faster delivery, installation, and exceptional customer service. This eye-opening experience prompted him to explore whether similar pricing advantages existed for other products.
After conducting extensive research, Devashish found that a staggering 93 percent of the products he investigated were cheaper when purchased offline. It became clear that there was a need to provide consumers with a platform that combined the convenience of online shopping with the affordability and personalized service of local businesses.
Revolutionizing the Shopping Experience:
OhLocal aims to replicate the traditional in-store shopping experience on a digital platform. Buyers can compare prices from different local sellers, access the OhLocal catalogue, discover offers, and even receive recommendations for alternate products—all within a single interface. This condensed shopping experience enhances consumer satisfaction, reduces the hassle of visiting multiple stores, and promotes local retail businesses.
While OhLocal competes indirectly with platforms like Dunzo, Amazon, and Flipkart, it distinguishes itself by catering specifically to India’s price-sensitive market. Devashish emphasizes that OhLocal’s approach is designed to appeal to three key user groups:
- The Online Shopper: Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping but seek faster delivery and better prices.
- The Price-Conscious Buyer: Individuals who diligently compare prices online and offline to secure the best deal.
- The Offline Shopper: Those who enjoy visiting physical stores for product discovery and competitive prices.
With Devashish Goyal‘s innovative approach and OhLocal’s commitment to empowering both local buyers and sellers, the platform is poised to transform the landscape of local commerce in India. It’s a win-win solution that combines the best of both online and offline shopping experiences, creating a brighter future for local businesses and consumers alike.
