Upasana Taku Chairman and co-founder of Mobikwik
Upasana Taku, Chairman and Co-Founder of Mobikwik, had a strong desire to work on or create solutions that impact millions of people in India.
Her Stanford University graduate followed her wishes and returned to India in 2008, giving up her illustrious career at payment industry giant PayPal and her HSBC. She started working for a local microfinance NGO called her Drishtee.
Through her friends, she met her husband and co-founder Bipin Preet Singh who is also keen to get into the payments industry. In 2009 she founded MobiKwik, a mobile charging platform that allows users to charge their phones from anywhere.
Since then, the business has expanded to include bill payments, e-commerce purchases, grocery delivery, gas station payments, major retail chains, pharmacies, Kirana stores and more. Their leading platform also allows peer-to-peer payments via Unified Payments Interface (UPI), MobiKwik Wallet, and his MobiKwik Wallet for bank payments. Initially, however, Upasana faced some challenges as he was seen as limited by his entrepreneurial identity. When she was managing her Mobikwik finances, she was asked by regulators and investment firms if she could speak to a man on the team. Unconcerned with this gender bias, Upasana created her one of the first mobile her wallets in India.
