Mukul Sareen Pioneering Sustainable Solutions in Plastics with Bio-Polymers
Plastic pollution has become a global concern, with India generating a staggering 9.46 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, a significant portion of which remains uncollected. This environmental crisis calls for innovative solutions, and Gurugram-based Hi-Tech International, under the leadership of Mukul Sareen, is at the forefront of change. Mukul Sareen’s commitment to sustainability has led the company to develop plant-based bio-polymers, a breakthrough product that offers a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
The Plastic Predicament
Plastic waste has plagued the planet, with a substantial 40 percent of India’s plastic waste going uncollected, leading to severe environmental consequences. This growing crisis compelled Mukul Sareen and Hi-Tech International to take action.
Founded by Jasbeer Sareen in 1982, Hi-Tech International initially focused on traditional plastics before expanding its portfolio to include polymers and anti-corrosion products. Today, the company boasts over 600 corrosion prevention products and serves 10,000 customers worldwide, with manufacturing plants spanning Italy, France, Dubai, and the US.
The Birth of Dr. Bio:
In response to the pressing need for sustainable alternatives to plastics, Hi-Tech International embarked on a mission to develop bio-polymers. Mukul Sareen, the Director of Business Development, recalls that the inspiration for this endeavour came in 2016 when global discussions about the environment reached a critical point. With their expertise in manufacturing VCI films, papers, foils, and more, the company was well-equipped to explore sustainable solutions.
Hi-Tech International’s journey towards bio-polymers began in earnest in 2016. The company invested in extensive research and development to create a bio-polymer that could effectively replace single and multi-use plastics. This endeavour marked the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Dr. Bio – The Sustainable Solution:
The result of Hi-Tech International’s efforts is Dr. Bio, a plant-based bio-polymer that promises to revolutionize the plastics industry. Dr. Bio products are 100 percent compostable, utilizing corn as the primary raw material. Unlike traditional plastics, Dr. Bio biodegrades within 12-14 weeks and completely decomposes in six months.
Dr. Bio made its debut in the export market in November 2020, reaching countries such as Mexico, France, Brazil, South Africa, and more. Its successful launch in India followed in June 2021, marking a significant step towards combating plastic pollution.
A Growing Market:
The global market for bio-polymers is on the rise, with the Asia-Pacific bio-polymer market projected to reach $6.3 billion by 2026. India’s bio plastics market is also poised for growth, estimated to reach $754.648 million by 2025. Hi-Tech International is well-positioned to capitalize on this burgeoning market.
While Europe leads in the adoption of bio-polymers, India is still in the learning phase. Mukul Sareen emphasizes the importance of educating Indian companies, especially in sectors like e-commerce, about the benefits of bio-polymers. Small steps, such as adopting 5 to 10 percent bio-polymers, can pave the way for widespread change.
The Role of COVID-19:
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented India with an opportunity to expand its global reach. Global suppliers are looking to diversify their sourcing beyond China, and India, along with other countries like Vietnam and Taiwan, stands to benefit. Hi-Tech International aims to leverage this opportunity for greater outreach.
A Vision for the Future:
Looking ahead, Hi-Tech International plans to engage with more brands across various sectors, particularly frozen foods and e-commerce, where plastic packaging is prevalent. The company intends to forge direct relationships with corn farmers and starch manufacturers to strengthen its supply chain.
Mukul Sareen’s dedication to environmental sustainability through Dr. Bio bio-polymers reflects his commitment to creating a cleaner and greener future. Hi-Tech International’s pioneering efforts in developing sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics demonstrate that innovation and vision can indeed drive meaningful change. With bio-polymers like Dr. Bio, Mukul Sareen is leaving an indelible mark on the journey towards a plastic-free world.
