A Teen Girl Who Founded Why Waste? To Save Our Mother Earth, Garvita Gulhati
Garvita Gulhati, a typical adolescent who is unconcerned about the outside world, was disturbed by the impending water problem. She launched her youth-led program ‘Why Waste?’ with the goal of changing people’s thinking about waste and conserving millions of liters of water lost every year by eateries.
The app, which has partnered with eateries and individuals, has saved over 10 million liters of water and impacted over six million people’s lives. It is a group of like-minded young people who are bringing water positivity on the world stage through innovative education and systemic change initiatives. Why Waste? strives to change people’s attitudes toward natural resources, particularly water, with the goal of creating a world of water-conscious citizens.
Garvita is a Bengaluru-based B Tech student who created Why Waste, an organization dedicated to water conservation. The company works with restaurants to help them avoid wasting water that has been left behind in glasses. They also hold workshops to promote awareness about water conservation at schools, colleges, non-profits, and offices.
In 2016, Why Waste? was named an “Ashoka Youth Venture.” They were named “Water Heroes” by Republic TV in a collaborative venture with the Government of India in 2020, after becoming India’s largest youth-led movement working towards water conservation.
Garvita received the title of “Global Changemaker” in 2018 and was named an Ashoka Young Changemaker earlier that year. In 2019, Yourstory media recognized her as India’s Young Achiever, and in 2020, she was dubbed India’s Water Girl.
She’s also been selected on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and received the ‘Earth Day Network Rising Star’ award.
